Chao Shao-an Wall Calendar: In the waning days of the Qing dynasty (16441911), Chinas first formal art schools were founded amid spirited debate about tradition, reform, and what it meant to be an artist in that culture. Chao Shao-an (19051998), a leader in the modernist movement who strove, like his masters, to learn from nature yet be inspired by inner sensibility, established the Lingnan Art Studio to advance this fresh approach. Chaos fluid brushwork, rich colors, and inventive composition are evident in these vibrant paintings of birds, flowers, and insects.
