Hiroshige Wall Calendar: The pictures of Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 17971858) convey a sense of timeless repose even as they capture fleeting seasonal changes. But as a photograph taken today at any place depicted in Hiroshiges celebrated series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo would instantly reveal, these scenes are very much of a certain era. Captured by the artist just a few years after the US naval commander Matthew Perry forced Japan to end two centuries of seclusion, these views portray a culture about to undergo a rapid transformation.
